The Long Term Impact of the Summer Work and Travel Program

Alumni participants from Greenheart Exchange’s Summer Work Travel Program write about their experiences and where this program has taken them. They detail the relationships they created, skills they acquired, and careers they have earned. These participants from China were so appreciative of the opportunities they were afforded by the Summer Work and Travel program that they wanted to share them with our greater Greenheart family! Read on for some of the highlights.

He Cui – 2016

My name is He Cui, and I got the chance to take part in the Summer Work Travel program in 2016. Throughout my experience in America, I worked at a fast food restaurant in Silverstone, Colorado and traveled across the beautiful country. One incredibly important influence that the program introduced me to was my career mentor, who I met in Indiana. Thanks to my mentor, I was empowered to start my own business and expand it to Canada, Hong Kong, and Tianjin, China. Now, I am in Toronto attending the car import and export trade show. It was my trip to the United States that inspired me to seek out this opportunity. I hope the Summer Work Travel program can grow even more to allow more and more young people to experience the charm and opportunities of the United States!

Zihao Wang – 2013

My name is Zihao Wang, and I took part in the Summer Work Travel program in 2013 in Santa Monica, California. The program has made many significant impacts on my life. Thanks to the program, I now have my own business: I am the head of the Hawaii Company in America and Asia, the largest Chinese travel agency in North America. Also, I met my wife, who is also my assistant at work, and we are expecting our first child next year. The Summer Work Travel program gave me a new life!

Shaoyan Cheng – 2016

My name is Shaoyan Cheng, and I took part in Summer Work Travel program in 2016. The program had a huge impact on me. My work, communication, and oral English skills have all improved greatly! My experience in the United States has been a great help during my job search. I am now working at a foreign trade company as a saleswoman. Not even a month into my new job, I got my first client.  It is really interesting to note that this client participated in the Summer Work Travel program during the summer 2016 season as well! Now that we know we have something in common, it is really easy to communicate and find common topics and interests to discuss. I am so grateful for all the opportunities the Summer Work Travel program has given me!

Jihui Zeng – 2013

My name is Jihui Zeng, and I took part in the Summer Work Travel program in 2013. This was my first time going abroad and traveling alone. I experienced a different culture and got the chance to become more independent. After participating in the program, I was more determined than ever to study abroad. Although I had traveled to different cities in China, going abroad to the United States opened my eyes and expanded my cultural knowledge. This experience inspired me to want to experience even more cultures. Now, I am studying abroad in Australia, and every day I learn about more cultural experiences in which Australians participate. Thanks to the Summer Work Travel program, I have become more eager to study abroad and more interested in experiencing the differences between China and other countries.
