Bike Safety 101

By: Debby Hernandez, Work and Travel Marketing and Outreach Intern

Riding a bike is a great way to commute to and from your job, and around your new community. As your visa sponsor, it’s our priority to make sure you stay happy, healthy, and safe! Here are 9 things to do while riding around town:

  1. Pick the Right Bike

Choose a safe and comfortable bike and check your ABC’s!

A: Check the air in your tires

B: Check your breaks

C: Check that your chain is on the gears

  1. Wear a Helmet

Wear a helmet to reduce potential injury from a fall or collision.

  1. Pay Attention

Be AWARE of your surroundings AT ALL TIMES! Avoid using headphones and DO NOT text and ride. Unfortunately, not all drivers are paying attention!

  1. Use Bike Paths or Sidewalks

Use designated bicycle paths that allow you to ride your bike in a safe environment.

  1. Signal and Look

Use hand signals to notify drivers when you are turning. Do NOT assume drivers will look before you turn! Follow all local laws and bike regulations.

  1. Be Visible at Night

Use a white headlight in the front of your bike and a red reflector on the back of your bike. Wear bright and reflective clothing at night so drivers can see you.

  1. Reduce Nighttime Biking

Most serious crashes happen at night. Instead, find other ways to get home at night, such as asking a coworker to drive you home.

  1. Avoid Busy Streets

Avoid highways and streets with high traffic.

  1. Cross the Road with Care

When you dismount and walk alongside your bike, you are considered a pedestrian. Do NOT walk along highways or other roadways where pedestrians are prohibited! If there are no sidewalks, walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Cross the street at a designated crosswalk or intersection.
