Growing up in a quaint coastal town in Maine, I was always captivated by the idea of the world beyond my familiar surroundings. Although deeply rooted in the rich traditions of my culture, I harbored a curiosity and a desire to explore different perspectives and experiences.

This curiosity led me to a pivotal decision during my college years: studying abroad in Australia. Immersing myself in a completely different culture was exhilarating. I was eager to understand how life in Australia differed from Maine, learn from new experiences, and bring back fresh ideas to enrich both my life and the lives of those around me.

Arriving in Australia, I was immediately struck by the openness of the people, the diversity of the landscape, and the harmonious blend of cultures. University life was a whirlwind of new encounters—meeting students from around the globe, engaging in lively classroom discussions, and navigating the dynamic Australian lifestyle.

I soon realized that this exchange was more than just an academic pursuit; it was a profound personal journey of cultural immersion. I embraced every opportunity to share my American heritage, from teaching how to tap maple trees for syrup to demonstrating the art of cracking a lobster. I became a bridge between two worlds, fostering mutual understanding and respect.

This transformative experience ignited a passion in me for cultural exchange that extended beyond just sharing my own culture. I witnessed how these interactions broke down stereotypes, fostered empathy, and created lasting connections between people from diverse backgrounds. This passion became the foundation of my career—working with cultural exchange programs, specifically Greenheart’s BridgeUSA J-1 Intern/Trainee program. For over 13 years, I have been advocating for international work and study opportunities, encouraging students and hosts to step outside their comfort zones and create enriching, life-changing experiences that resonate across continents.
